Are the gear teeth made out of some kind of fabric/fiber, or is that just a weird finish on metal?

It’s Micarta. Fiber plus resin.

Layered cloth and phenol resin, to absorb shock and reduce noise. Dates back to the days of the Model T.

Here’s a set for an Iron Duke - which was an engine in production up until ‘93...

I see he chose one made of repurposed burlap coffee sacks. Very on-trend.

So the crank gear is all steel, huh? I bet that cam gear takes ALL the abuse, and therefore is the only one that needs replacement.

Made out of similar materials, the crank gear would wear more than twice as fast as the cam gear - this way, not so much.

*thinks for a moment, nods* It would, wouldn’t it? Yeah, that makes sense.
Any idea on life expectancy? I wonder if the new gear’s made to be more wear-resistant than the old one.

heh, used car salesmen used to put pancake syrup in with oil to make engines quit leaking.... used to, whenever youd see a super clean, non leaking engine, it was not a bad idea to taste it for sweetness.......

That would have to do with the hardness of the resin. It’s possible for a Micarta gear to run over a hundred thousand miles pretty easily - which in no possible way will equal remaining miles in the TracyJeep.
